  • Extra informatie: - The force and violence of the reign of Philip the Fair have made it one of the most controversial periods in French medieval history. Because so little is known of the monarch himself, historians from Michelet, Thierry, and Guizot to the present have attributed the unusual events of the age to lawyers who were presumably inspired by the absolutist maxims of the revived Roman law. Believing that political power is indivisible, these lawyers of the last Capetian kings sought to destroy the privi- leges of any group that threatened the sovereignty of their royal master-hence the bitter struggle with Boniface VIII, the establishment of the Avignon Papacy, the destruction of the Templars, the expulsion of the Jews, the confiscation of Lombard wealth, and other lesser known incidents that gave the reign its turbulent character. Dr. Pegues develops a significant reinterpretation of the roles of the lawyers of Philip the Fair in a study that not only re-examines their part in these famous events but deals with their social origins and the means by which they rose to power. He considers the importance of family re- lations, influence, patronage, and personal ambition as factors determining the nature of their careers. Utilizing the unpublished Chancery Registers of the last Capetian kings, court records, and ecclesiastical materials, as well as published sources and com- ment, he adds to our knowledge of the bet- ter known lawyers and sheds new light on several lesser known but equally important figures. He follows the lawyers beyond Philip the Fair, through the tragic reigns of his three sons, and examines the subsequent fortunes of the families and landed dynasties established by these men. The result is a reappraisal of their significance for the age of the last Capetians as well as for French history in general.
