- What political theories did the Dutch develop in the 17th century, to describe and justify the existence of a republic, that in one generation had grown conspicuously in wealth and power? In this book the meaning of political philosophy for a new state is outlined. The first essay is a study of Dutch political theory in the 17th century and is based on an analysis of publications in law and philosophy between 1660 and 1690. The second essay studies the Dutch concept of popular sovereignity in the early 17th century, whereas the third considers Dutch 17th and 18th century views on the nature of a republic.
