  • Extra informatie: - In this book, Gérard Giordanengo analyzes the development of feudal law in Provence and Dauphiné, two regions of written law in medieval and early modern France where Roman law (the Corpus iuris civilis) was considered authoritative and formed the basis of civil legal practice. Unlike other regions and countries of customary law, these territories quickly incorporated the influence of learned Roman law, taught in particular at the University of Bologna. The author studies in detail notarial acts, oaths of loyalty, homage, and vassal agreements to show how feudal structures became formalized. He demonstrates that feudalism, initially based on oral and customary practices, was transformed thanks to legal formalism and written culture. In Provence and Dauphiné, feudal law became more structured and stabilized, thanks to the intervention of jurists trained in Roman and canon law. The book thus traces the transition to a legalized feudalism, deeply rooted in a written culture and legal reasoning.
