  • Extra informatie: - With the armorial In Promptu bookplate of the Trotters on the upper pastedown. The book is acquired around 1695 by John Trotter (1667-1718), the son of John Trotter, first Baron of Mortonhall, an Edinburgh merchant, a keen book collector and frequenter of auctions and known for his notes written in his books. In this book a loose bookmark with the text : "This French Grammar by Charl. Maupasio, translated by Theod. Jacom. into Latine belongs to Mr. John Brown; but I find somethings init [Grotius] that make me desire to have it altho it should cost me the dearer. Meall 16 Nov. 1695."Also present on the first free endpaper the initials JB. The John Brown mentioned by Trotter may well be John Brown, of Wamphray (1610-1679), Scottish church leader, who went to Rotterdam in March 1663 after being imprisoned after the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy, and ministered in the Scots Church in Rotterdam. He died there in September 1679. He was aged about 69, and apparently unmarried. His wealth consisted in his library. He bequeathed by his will, dated 2 April 1676, "one hundred guineas to the poor of the Scottish congregation, Rotterdam, after the selling of his books" Unfortunately, this book was not included in the auction catalog of 1679, but fits perfectly into the large collection, which included many other books by Grotius.
