• Extra informatie: - First French translation of : The State of the Prisons in England and Wales; with preliminary Observations, and an account of some foreign prisons (1777). John Howard (1726-1790) devoted much of his life to the improvement of the conditions then prevailing in prisons. The publication in 1777 led to legislation abolishing abuses in prisons and providing for their proper cleaning. The Howard League for Penal Reform is one of the results of his work. Later Howard travelled extensively in Europe, carrying out an elaborate investigation into the hygienic conditions of hospitals.
