  • Extra informatie: - The 'Constitution civile du clergé' of 1790 was a revolutionary law that placed the Roman Catholic Church in France under state control. It was adopted by the National Constituent Assembly on July 12, 1790, during the French Revolution. The French Catholic Church was thus transformed into a state church, and all church property was nationalized. Under the 'Constitution civile du clergé' (1790), the clergy and members of religious orders who lived under monastic rules (regula) - such as Benedictines, Franciscans, and Dominicans- were required to swear the constitutional oath to the new revolutionary state. This oath conflicted with their vow of loyalty to the Pope and led to a profound religious crisis. This study examines the meaning and consequences of taking or refusing to take this oath, which represented a choice with significant moral, religious, and political implications. This led to a division between "constitutional" clergy, who took the oath of loyalty, and "refractory" clergy, who refused out of allegiance to Rome. The consequences included a deep religious divide within French society, the loss of papal authority in France, the persecution of "refractory" clergy, and the closure of monasteries.
