It can be defended only by the positive affirmation of these beliefs. Freedom of thought is here regarded as justified only to the extent to which we believe in the power of thought and accept our obligation to culti- vate the things of the mind; economic liberty is considered merely as a social technique suitable for the administration of a particular productive method. Freedom as a right to do as you please has in this view only a remote bearing on public liberty.
