• Extra informatie: - Henry Dunckley (1823-1896), English journalist, won the Anti-Corn-law Leagues prize in 1852 with an essay on the results of the free-trade policy, published in 1854 under the title The Charter of the Nations. This book promoted the aim of the League to establish a fully free-trade economy. This in order to decrease the price of basic food products (such as bread and agricultural produce), to support the performance of agriculture and industry, thus to establish stronger commercial relations to promote peace with the other nations. This is a rare Dutch translation from 1856. In respect to the termination of corn laws (1846) and low protective import duties on grain (untill 1877) the Dutch copied the British system. The discussion of Dutch economists at the time, who argued invariably in favor of non-protection, was heavily influenced by economic theory and the experience of the English.
