  • Extra informatie: Very rare original edition of the "Groß-Berlin-Gesetzes = Greater Berlin Law" of 1920. - The law of 1920 significantly changed the city of Berlin into Greater Berlin and made it the third largest city in the world after London and New York with 3.8 million inhabitants. - "The driving force behind the law on the formation of a new city municipality of Berlin was the mayor of Berlin, Adolf Wermuth. In the vote on April 27, 1920 in the Prussian State Constituent Assembly, the SPD, USPD and parts of the DDP voted for it, while the DNVP, DVP and Zentrum voted against it. The law was passed with 164 votes to 148, with five abstentions, and came into force on October 1, 1920. The six independent cities of Berlin-Lichtenberg, Berlin-Schöneberg, Berlin-Wilmersdorf, Charlottenburg, Neukölln and Spandau were thus incorporated into the former city municipality of Berlin, as well as the city municipality of Cöpenick, 59 rural municipalities and 27 estate districts from the surrounding districts of Niederbarnim, Osthavelland and Teltow. Greater Berlin was created with 20 consecutively numbered districts. This added another 1.9 million inhabitants to the 1.9 million Berliners up to that point; almost 1.2 million of them came from the seven surrounding cities alone. The urban area grew from 66 km to 878 km. This made Berlin the second largest city in the world in terms of area after Los Angeles and the third largest city (3.8 million) in terms of population after London (7.3 million) and New York (5.6 million).
