The integrative wave covers both mainstream and critical criminologies and is part of a larger and emerging paradigm of interdisciplinarity that transcends East/West and North/South relations. This book is essentially devoted to the value and practice of interdisciplinary criminology. The contributions aim to represent the full array of integrative thinking and analysis, and are divided into five parts. Part one analyzes and explores the state of criminological integration, critically examining the various meanings and approaches to integration. The second part represents an evolving examination of the complex integrations involved in neo-colonial and post-colonial theories and their accounts of crime and crime control regarding race. In part three different and overlapping interpretations and models of integrative delinquency are examined. Numerous theories and perspectives on crime and deliquency are included, such as social learning, social ecology, social bonding, social control, Marxist, control-power, class, labelling, interactional and networking. Part four looks at different approaches to both general and integrative approaches to crime and criminology. As a group these essays address crime, criminal behaviour and crime control, as they intersect with such essential issues as social structure, social change, social ecology, social evolution, social victimization, social politics and gender relations. Finally, the book contains closing words on the future and the need for integration. The message is that the time is well past when criminologists should be engaged in the theory and practice of integration. What all of these efforts in criminological integration share in common are models that confirm the observations of one of the early sociological integrationists, Emile Durkheim, who maintained that crime and deviance was not fundamentally pathogenic behaviour. On the contrary, as he and the contributors to this volume all agree, crime and criminals are both normal and rational behaviour, adaptive responses to the prevailing and changing political economies and social ecologies.
