  • Extra informatie: - In 1931 the Republic was proclaimed in Spain by a revolutionary committee led by Alcalá Zamora when riots broke out after the municipal elections and King Alfonso XIII fled the country. The revolutionary committee declared itself an interim government with Alcalá Zamora as head of state. This left-wing constitution was adopted in 1931, resulting in land reforms and strongly anti-clerical legislation. The government no longer paid the priests' wages; civil marriage was allowed and divorce became possible.
