  • Extra informatie: - Fine copy of thesis on the Triple Aliance (1668) by Aeneas, baron Mackay (1806-1876). The Triple Alliance was signed by the Kingdom of England, the Swedish Empire and the Dutch Republic in May 1668. It was created in response to the occupation of the Spanish Netherlands and Franche-Comté by France (Louis XIV). Although Spain and Emperor Leopold were not signatories, they were closely involved in the negotiations. It consisted of three separate agreements: a defensive alliance, an undertaking to oblige Spain and France to make peace, and secret clauses that included mediating an end to the war between Spain and Portugal and enforcing the peace by military action if required. The author started his career as a lawyer before he was elected in the House of Representatives of the States General. In 1862 he was appointed vice-president of the Council of State (Raad van State) in 1862 by the liberal minister Johan Rudolph Thorbecke. In that position, and a confidant of King Willem III, he had a lot of influence on the cabinet formations of his time.
