  • Extra informatie: From the publisher : For more than seven centuries Magna Carta has been revered as a peculiarly sacrosanct document, a statement of ancient and inviol able liberties which are the 'birthright' of the English people and beyond the inter ference of the state. This work is an attempt to analyse the nature and significance of such a belief in English political thought and practice since the seventeenth century. The author shows how the English turned to the Charter to oppose arbitrary government, whether royal or parliamentary, and how the Charter became the property of both radical reformers and conservative consti tutionalists. In addition, it is suggested that Magna Carta has been a major stumbling block to the formulation of abstract political theory. Finally, the author describes how the gradual repeal of much of the Charter as a consequence of law reform has left only four clauses on the statute book, and discusses the value of the Charter today.
