Born on Christmas Day, 1831, Palles ascended the Bench at the early age of forty-two, and spent another forty two years in the administration of justice in Ireland before his retirement in 1916. During that time what had been a judicial figure became a judicial institution and his reputation as a lawyer has led to his opinions being treated with almost reverential awe by members of the legal profession throughout the whole of the common law world.
