  • Extra informatie: - This work was first published in 1731 by the Napolitan lawyer Giuseppe Aurelio di Gennaro (1701-1761) This is the 2nd edtiton, with an biographical introduction by Friedrich Otto Mencke (1708-1745). His first work was the curious Respublica jurisconsultorum (1731), which he wrote at the age of thirty. In this volume, Gennaro imagined that in a remote corner of the Mediterranean there was an island, in which all the jurists went after their death. These had founded a government which, on the basis of the Roman Republic, was divided into three orders: senators, knights and plebeians. The first were constituted by the jurists who had lived in the current period between Sesto Papirio and Modestino; the order of the knights gathered all the experts of law who, after Modestino, under whom the decadence of the Roman jurisprudence was sanctioned, had lived between Rome and Constantinople; the people, finally, was composed of those jurists who had discussed their theses with sagacity and wit. Di Gennaro himself landed on the island, finding himself a consulate, like Ulpiano and Papiniano and president of the Sulpicius Senate. This work was resumed and continued, twenty years later, with the 'Feriae autumnales post reditum a republica jurisconsultorum' (1752). Here, in fact, he imagined that, once returned from the island, travelers spent their autumn holidays together to discuss, in the form of dialogues, the rules of law.
