Nice and clean copy in contemporary binding of the first edition of a typical 18th century encyclopedic work on the history of the church. Formey (1711-1797) was not only an infatigable Prussian literator and savant from French origin, but also pastor at the Huguenot church in Berlin, professor of philosophy and secretary of the Academy of Science and Literature in Berlin. He wrote about 600 ! works dedicated to science, philosophy, morals, religion and did much to popularize Leibniz philosophy in France. This is his work on the history of the church, that was already translated into English in 1766. At the end of volume 2 he deals shortly with groups like enthousiasts, fanatiques, séparatistes, Quakers, Rose-crucians, mennonites (anabaptists), unitarians (in Poland, Transsylvania, Germany, Holland and England), and finally a few words on the Jews. (Cf. Quérard III-164vv.). At the end of vol. 2 is included a "Catalogue des livres nouveaux" of publisher/bookseller Schneider of Amsterdam (21p). Printed ex-libris on inside frontcover. 6 copies in Dutch Central catalogue (NCC), 2 US copies (of 3) in OCLC nr. 41250294.
